Congratulations to Dr. Ron Andrade (‘18), who successfully defended his doctoral dissertation at San Francisco State. Titled The Influence of Validation on Academic Outcomes for Oceania Community College Students, the dissertation examines the extent to which Oceania students experience validation by institutional actors on a community college campus.

President Michael Claire will be recommending Dr. Enna Trevathan to Chancellor Galatolo and to the Board of Trustees as CSM’s new Director of Nursing.

CSM leaders — a coalition of administration, faculty, staff, and student representatives from the Institutional Planning Committee (IPC), Academic Senate, and Classified Senate and the Associated Students — met for a retreat at the Cañada Vista clubhouse on Friday, March 16. This year’s Flex Day included most of the faculty and staff at CSM. The day’s first session was opened by representatives of Escala (Spanish for “striving”), a consortium of higher education consultants who are committed personally and professionally to increasing the retention and graduation rates of underrepresented students in higher education.

On Wednesday, March 14, students, faculty, staff, and administrators from CSM joined people across the country in coming together to show solidarity with the victims of the Parkland high school massacre and to make a statement against gun violence.

CSM recently completed its annual survey of satisfaction levels of its students, faculty and staff. Once again, results are overwhelmingly positive: satisfaction levels range from 84 percent – 100 percent for students, staff, and faculty and administrators.

College of San Mateo is pleased to announce Paul Hankamp as the first Distance Education (DE) Coordinator for the institution. Paul has been a biology faculty member at CSM since 2011. In addition to traditional lecture and lab courses, he teaches web-assisted and fully online courses.

President Claire welcomed the attendees and stated that housing is major concern for students, faculty and staff. Don Horsley, San Mateo County Board President, opened the program, and an introduction was done by Michael Lane, HLC Board President, followed by a keynote address by Steven Sust, Child Psychiatry Co-Chief Fellow at Stanford.

Roach completed a fellowship at Stanford Global Studies in June 2016. The fellowship allowed her the opportunity to reenvision her introduction to research course so that it reflects the global nature of the information ecosystem and acknowledges the inequity within it.

Apple Tree Dental, an independent nonprofit, just started a new program in October to provide education, preventive, and restorative dental care to students and faculty at CSM.
