An artist’s reception on Saturday from 2-4 pm celebrates the group photography exhibit “From Mind to Lens” at Avenue 25 Gallery in San Mateo. The show is on view through March 2.

The competition was open to all high school students in the Bay Area. Bay Area viewers will have the opportunity to watch the student productions, as part of the Youth Cinema public television series to air on KCSM this fall.

College of San Mateo right-hander Devin Bradley has accepted a scholarship offer from Coastal Carolina. “He took a trip there and loved it,” CSM coach Doug Williams said. “He and his dad were very impressed.”

CSM student Luis Alvarez is about to embark on what may be the ultimate hands-on homework assignment: this 20-year-old astrophysics major from San Mateo is preparing to spend three weeks in the subfreezing landscape of the Arctic as part of an astronomical research project.

California’s top educator, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, is a CSM alum and graduate of Westmoor High School. He attended the college in 1968-69 and transferred to UC Berkeley where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees and a teaching credential.
