A year ago, the College of San Mateo softball team advanced to the community college state championship tournament by virtue of its pitching. This year, it was the bats that propelled the Lady Bulldogs back to Mt. San Antonio College.

It was perhaps fitting that the 400th softball victory by College of San Mateo softball coach Nicole Borg and her staff — 6-4 over host Ohlone College — also gave the state top-ranked Lady Bulldogs a game and a half lead over the rival Renegades in the Coast North Conference.

Despite a bump in the road last season that cost the Bulldogs a sixth consecutive crown, they had a chance to return to the top of the Coast Conference with a win over the rival Renegades Tuesday in San Mateo. It wasn’t easy, but CSM recaptured the conference crown with a 9-6 win over Ohlone.

With the second inning going south, the No. 1-ranked Lady Bulldogs (6-1 Coast North, 26-4 overall) were forced to turn to McAdams in relief Saturday at West Valley. Entering with the bases loaded and two outs, the freshman briefly faltered by walking Malia Pula to force home the tying run. From there, though, McAdams was flawless.

It was just two seasons ago that Nicole Borg earned her 300th win as head coach of College of San Mateo softball. The Lady Bulldogs have continued to win at such a prolific rate since then, the 12th-year coach has now reached No. 400.

This year, CSM was proud to induct 19 women and men, who have distinguished themselves either as CSM athletes or later in their careers, into the Sports Hall of Fame at a banquet held on February 9.
