Victory No. 7 was a win like no other this season for the undefeated College of San Mateo Bulldogs. A 24-hourlong adventure that started with the game being relocated from the Bulldogs’ home field ended in an impromptu road trip to Oakland, and a 29-14 victory Saturday afternoon over Laney College. With CSM’s campus being entirely closed down Saturday and Sunday as a precaution in case electrical power was cut by Pacific Gas & Electric, the Bulldogs had to go into hurry-up mode to not only transport the team to Oakland on 24 hours notice, but to clear their locker room and facilities of all game-day equipment and uniforms as the campus was not accessible Saturday.

Right on the cusp of the California Community College volleyball rankings, College of San Mateo is in danger of falling out of the top 25 for the first time this season. Friday night’s four-set loss at Cabrillo (6-0 Coast North, 14-5 overall) is a tough one indeed but was expected to be. Cabrillo entered the night in first place in the Coast Conference North, one game ahead of the second-place Lady Bulldogs (4-2, 13-7). Riding a three-match winning streak entering Friday’s showdown, CSM continued rolling by taking the first set off Cabrillo. But after an equalizer in Game 2, the Bulldogs let a late Game 3 lead slip away en route to a 22-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-15 loss.

Mike Marcial has been the head coach for the new men’s basketball program at College of San Mateo for a more than a year and still hasn’t won a game. On the other hand, he hasn’t lost a game, either. In fact, Marcial and the Bulldogs have not even played a game. Named coach in May of 2018 for a program that was coming off a 35-year hiatus, Marcial has spent the last year assembling a coaching staff and then hitting the recruiting trail to find players. All that work will finally come to fruition as the CSM men’s basketball team will open the 2019-20 season at the City College of San Francisco tournament the weekend of Nov. 1.
